Most freight forwarders arrange the movement and hand the customs entry to a third-party broker. That handoff is where containers sit accruing demurrage at £80–£200 a day while two companies wait for each other. Gxpresss files the declaration itself, directly on HMRC's Customs Declaration Service, with an electronic inventory link at your arrival port: Destin8, CNS, CCS-UK or Pentant. Declarations from £45, and £0 brokerage on Heathrow air freight.

What Is a Freight Forwarder?

A freight forwarder arranges the transport of goods on a trader's behalf: booking carriers, consolidating cargo, preparing documentation and coordinating collection and delivery: without necessarily owning the ships, aircraft or vehicles involved. In the UK a forwarder normally also arranges the customs declaration, though most sub-contract that step to a separate broker. Gxpresss does not: the same team that books the freight files the entry.

The distinction matters commercially. A forwarder that sub-contracts the entry cannot tell you on the day whether your goods will be released, because it does not hold the inventory link at the port. It has to ask someone else.

How to Choose a Freight Forwarder in the UK

When evaluating freight forwarding companies for your UK import and export operations, ask these 7 critical operational questions:

  1. Do they file their own customs entries? Ask directly. If the answer is "we work with a broker", the handoff is on your timeline and their margin.
  2. Which community system providers are they linked to? Destin8, CNS, CCS-UK and Pentant cover different ports. A forwarder without a link at your arrival port cannot obtain release.
  3. Is the quote all-in? Freight rates quoted without clearance, handling and delivery are not comparable to ones that include them.
  4. What happens out of hours? Perishables and AOG parts do not arrive between nine and five.
  5. Direct or indirect representation? Non-established traders need indirect representation; not every forwarder offers it.
  6. Are they a limited company at a real trading address? Checkable free at Companies House.
  7. Do they handle your commodity? Pharmaceuticals, foodstuffs and chemicals carry Port Health and IPAFFS requirements that general forwarders often decline.

Frequently Asked Questions

A freight forwarder arranges the international and domestic transportation of cargo on behalf of importers and exporters. This includes booking space with airlines, ocean shipping lines, and road hauliers, managing cargo consolidation, preparing shipping documentation (bills of lading, airway bills), and coordinating port handling, customs clearance, and inland delivery.

A freight forwarder arranges physical transportation and logistics, while a customs broker prepares and submits legal customs declarations to HMRC. Most freight forwarders outsource customs filing to third-party brokers. Gxpresss combines both roles in-house: the same team managing your freight files your CDS entry directly, preventing clearance delays and split liability.

Freight forwarding costs depend on cargo volume (CBM), gross weight (kg), transport mode (air, sea FCL/LCL, or road), and origin. For customs clearance, Gxpresss charges a transparent fixed fee from £45 per standard import declaration, with £0 customs brokerage on Heathrow air freight shipments booked through us.

Yes. Our operations near Heathrow Airport handle air cargo collections, airline bookings, and transit shed handling directly in-house. For sea freight, we book FCL and LCL container capacity directly with shipping lines and manage port shunting and devanning. For road freight across the UK and Europe, we coordinate dedicated and groupage transport with full customs documentation.

When a freight forwarder sub-contracts customs clearance, paperwork must be passed to a separate broker who may take days to pre-lodge or clear queries. If errors occur, the importer pays £80 to £200 per day in port demurrage while both companies point fingers. Handling both in-house ensures pre-lodged declarations and immediate port release.

We operate across all 26 commercial UK seaports (including Felixstowe, Southampton, London Gateway, Liverpool, Tilbury, and Dover), and all 6 major international cargo airports including London Heathrow (LHR), East Midlands (EMA), Manchester (MAN), London Stansted (STN), Birmingham (BHX), and London Gatwick (LGW).

Most standard freight forwarding and customs clearance quotes are provided within one working hour during business hours. Submit your shipment details via our online quote form or call our operations team on +44 207 993 6953.

Yes. In addition to freight and customs, we provide customs bonded warehousing, ERTS/ETSF temporary storage, quayside container shunting, and loose cargo devanning/palletisation across primary port corridors.
